Film Analysis of Gladiator The film Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott, made its debut on May 5, 2000. Gladiator left its audience with both the highest praise and harshest rebuke. The historical action film was described as a â€Å"flashy, violent spectacle, everything a movie needs to be† by Haro-online, but Stephen Hunter of Entertainment Guide said, â€Å"Thumbs down! Drive that short sword though its palpitating heart, and pay no attention to its squeals for mercy†¦It’s not great. It’s a disappointment, so kill it swiftly and be done.† Reviews that contrast this much lead one to wonder what the criteria for a great historical action film would entail. One important criterion a historical action film must have is a certain degree of historical accuracy. However, a film doesn’t have to mirror history; rather, it has only to give a sense that what takes place in the film could have actually happened. It is nearly impossible to convert history in its exact form over to an entertaining film; therefore, some liberties are certainly allowable in historical accuracy, but the directors must be careful not to stretch the possibilities. Another piece of criteria that fits well with the historical accuracy is how meticulous the setting, costumes, weaponry, and battle scenes are created. A historical action film would lose much credibility if its setting isn’t set in its appropriate time period along with the costumes and props. A majority of the time, this is also where special effects come into play. A filmmaker has to utilize special effects and computer graphics to reconstruct its venue and replicate its date in history. The mos... ...side Movies. So what constitutes a successful historical action movie? Realistic historical accuracy. Amazing attention to detail. Intriguing plot. High emotions. Superb special effects. Outstanding score. Great casting and acting. Rave reviews. Gladiator possesses all these and is the epitome of a great historical action film. Yet accolades alone did not make it a box-office success. Many films garner pre-release raves, yet disappoint in front of an actual audience. Gladiator delivered on all counts, from its early praise to its amazing box-office success, setting records in theatres coast-to-coast. The perfect combination of all these melded with its attention to historical detail make Gladiator worthy of its Best Picture award and a true classic for the ages, much like its classic cousin Ben-Hur.

In the event of the American Revolution, the general feeling of the colonists can be understood by reviewing the acts of the British Parliament, and how it affected the british subjects across the Atlantic. While some argue the actions taken by American Patriots were completely radical, one can understand that, while this is truly an unprecedented event, it is also quite justifiable. The 7 Years War caused the British to place levies on its colonies, but failed to do so in a manner that appealed to its subjects. In opposition, Americans reared up and acted with utter disdain towards its head of state, and went out of its way to pull away and form its own government, a movement never before witnessed by subjects of the British Empire, Following the French and Indian War, Britain, in order to finance debts, enforced certain acts on the colonies. Among these included the Proclamation Act of 1763, Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Quartering Act, and Declaratory Act. In the Proclamation Act, King Ge orge III felt weary of the cost of protecting colonists from skirmishes with the Native Americans, and prohibited any westward colonisation into the newly acquired lands past the Appalachians Mountains. The Colonists felt this was unfair, as they had done much of the fighting in the war that gained them the new lands, and were now forced to avoid them. This was the first publicized case of euthanasia. Since then lawmakers have wondered if euthanasia should be legal in every state. Since Americans have control over every aspect of their lives, they should have control over if and when they die. If a person is terminally ill they should have the choice to die with dignity or live their death sentence. In the oath it states that doctors are to do everything to relieve the pain and suffering of their patients. In that case it should the doctors duty to assist the patient with their wishes. This job includes schedules for the nurses, patients, scheduling tests for the patients. I will also need to know the international metric system along with dosage calculations, one must know three important pieces of information, the desired dose, the dosage strength and the medications’ unit of measure (Survey of Math p 609). I will also use mathematics in my career by doing schedules, coordinating the staff on different shifts, making sure the staff is not working over 8-9 hours unless it is necessary, also making sure the staff doesn’t overlap one another’s schedule and handling the payroll. It is very important for people that work in the medical field to know what their doing when it comes to measurements of medication particularly, any miscalculation’s due to a staff members error can lead to 1) losing your job, 2) losing your license, and or prison time if it is fatal. One example of a similar incident that was not to long ago, and is still in the hands of the courts involved Michael Jackson and Dr. Conrad Murray. Reports stated that Michael Jackson died from a propofol overdose; propofol is a drug that reduces anxiety and tension, and promotes relaxation consciousness. Dr. Conrad Murray is being charged with involuntary manslaughter for giving Michael Jackson multiple medications intravenously; which is a needle directly into the vein. Reports have stated that Dr.  Murray gave Michael Jackson valium which is a sedative, along with numerous amounts of pain medication and anti-depressant medications throughout a 10 hour period. These multiple medications were found in Michael Jackson’s toxicology report. They state that Michael Jackson had enough medication in his body to sedate a large animal (KTLA. com info). Another similar incident was that of a oncologist that wrote orders for a new salvage regimen that employed higher doses of chemotherapy than usual. The patient developed acute renal failure and required weeks of dialysis, but ultimately recovered, and the tumor responded. The physician later discovered that he had mistakenly ordered four times the recommended amount of the nephrotoxic drug in the treatment regimen. The physician decided not to tell the patient, 6 months later the tumor progressed and the patient obtained a second opinion. The patient learned of the error the first physician made and sued the doctor settling for $75,000 dollars (PubMed Central). The patient survived and the tumor was taken care of, but as you can see mistakes are made like this every day, sometimes people don’t get another chance. Most of the time, the mistakes are made mathematically. The medical field is very crucial when it comes to mathematics. You must be on top of things, re-read your care plan every time you need to administer medications. A care plan can vary from patient to patient, but for the most part it included numerous activities, such as administering medications, careful documentation of dosages and avoiding interactions. Starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products. Administering therapies and treatment, observing the patient and recording those observations; and consulting with the physician or supervisor on duty (â€Å"Summary report for 29 – 111. 00 – Registered nurses,† 2010, Tasks). In this line of work documentation of everything that happens with the patient is very important. In conclusion, my math 103, survey of mathematics taught me a lot. I learned how to subtract, add, multiply, and divide w negative and positive numbers. This was one of my greatest challenges. Reducing fractions, radicals, algebra, solving an equation, percentage formula’s, application of percents, the american system of measurement, the scientific system, set theories, and more. I learned a great deal and will be able to take this with me in the future for my career goal. My Goals and Aspirations Essay It is sad how my expectations have gone down with every year of high school, but I guess that is just what the real world is all about. I started my freshman year out talking about wanting to be a doctor or a scientist or a millionaire. I am about to leave high school not having a clue on what I want to do with my life. I has been hard to observe my grades going from practically straight As as a freshman to the sad state of nearly having my credits denied this senior year. But now that I know that one has to face the responsibilities for every decision one makes, I might be ready to make some smart ones. No, I do not think that I can become a brain surgeon or a world-renowned scientist or, unless I win the lottery, a millionaire but I can try to do my best to become all that I can be with the options that I have. The marines, army, air force, and navy call my home non-stop, but I have already shot those options down. I am also not going to limit myself to just a high school diploma and enter the workforce. My parents do not think it is wise for me to enter a junior college, and I dont think that is wise either. But I do think that I can still salvage some of my parents hopes for me but registering into The University of Houston for a year and then transferring to a more acclaimed university such as The University of Texas or Northeastern University in Boston. I have though it over and I think I might want to major in something that would get me into becoming a stockbroker. My parents have wanted me to get into computer programming because they say that is where the growth sector is, right now, for employment. But somehow, I just do not think that is what I want to do with my life, too boring for me. I guess my main goal in life is just to be happy. The American Dream of having a wife that I am in love with, a stable job, loving children, and a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence, and a dog named Clinton would be just fine for me. But the truth is that I do not think will never be truly satisfied in my life. And that is how it should be, for I always want to be on the lookout for something better.
